Northern Lights Rooms

Authors: Leila Nanuk, Maja Močibob, Katarina Mustać
Location: Island
Surface: cca 1500 m²
Project year: 2018
Project type: Competition project

Set on the shore of a quiet lake surrounded by untouched nature, the project introduces a discreet, one-storey structure that harmonizes with its setting and the spectacle of the Aurora Borealis. The circular form, a symbol of unity and gathering, organizes movement from the center outward toward the lake. Visitors arrive via a local road that expands into a small parking area and entrance square. At the heart of the building lies an open courtyard — a place for meeting and rest — from which paths lead through guest areas and end by the lake, where visitors can peacefully observe the Northern Lights.

The building is organized into clear functional zones: entrance, guest, dining, and service areas. Compact concrete cores hold serving spaces, while open and fluid rooms form the served ones, all connected by a continuous roof that shapes terraces, porticos, and transitional outdoor areas. Circulation unfolds through three concentric paths — inner, central, and outer — creating a rhythm between openness and enclosure. In this balance, the building becomes both introverted and extroverted, quietly merging architecture with the surrounding landscape.
