Former Nada Dimić Factory Block, Zagreb

Author: Leila Nanuk
Location: Zagreb
Area: —
Year of project: 2016
Project type: Academic project

The project is located within a typical urban block of Zagreb’s Lower Town, bordered by Branimirova, Bornina, Domagojeva, and Erdödyjeva streets, in close proximity to the railway line. The site once housed a mixed residential and industrial complex, formerly occupied by the Nada Dimić and Penkala factories. After their closure in the 1990s, the existing buildings gradually deteriorated and were demolished, creating a rare large undeveloped area in the very center of the city—an ideal opportunity for a new urban and architectural intervention.

The design brief includes the development of an office building with accompanying facilities, as well as the urban design of the block’s interior. The plan envisions relocating the old Branimirova market into this newly formed public space, thus reactivating the interior of the block. A continuous pedestrian connection in the north–south direction has been established, transforming the block into a new link within the urban grid and enabling the creation of a contemporary, accessible, and functional city space.
